Outtake 3 : Young Sam & Dean Winchester - In the beginning

What's the concept ?
I conceived this drawing as a photo from the Winchesters' family album. Here are Sam & Dean in 1987-88 on the hood of the "most important object of the Universe". I wanted to draw a fan arts of the boys' childhood for a long time and Swan Song was just the inspiration I needed. I also wanted something less dramatic and dark than, for instance, one of my previous fan arts called Don't turn around Sammy, Don't turn around. Even the Winchesters had happy moments in their childhood, I guess.
Dean doesn't have his amulet in this drawing ?
No. I thought that Sam was a little bit too young here to actually give a present to his brother. For the moment Sammy plays with his toy soldiers and put them into their father's car ashtray, ignoring that it would help him to save the world about 20 years later.
Talking about the Winchesters' childhood, you should really check out this beautiful fan art called Winchesters 1989 by Becc-j on her DA Gallery. I wish she will draw a 2010 version one day because the concept is really cool.
You seemed to have used a photo of Jensen as a reference picture for Dean, why didn't you do the same for Sam ?
Because, I may suck at researches, I don't know, but I wasn't able to find a photo of Jared when he was a kid. The reference photos I had of Colin Ford didn't fit at all so I choose a screenshot of Alex Ferris, Sammy in Something Wicked and changed his nose to make it a little bit bigger (sorry Jared..). As far as Dean was concerned, it was easier, some of Jensen childhood photos are available on the Internet on desiring-jensen.org (it was strange, I had the feeling to be a creepy stalker while doing my researches but hey, it helped for my fan art!
)
Their clothes are really simple..
I wanted at the beginning to draw Dean with a Transformers T-shirt or any other Tshirt with cartoon characters that were popular amongst American kids at the end of the 80's (GI Joe, Mask, etc) but finally I stepped back. I don't think that fashion was the most important thing for John Winchester when he had to buy clothes for his kids. Even if he loved his boys, he had other problems. Let's stay simple.
More Young Winchesters illustrations in the future ?
I have one project in mind : the whole family in the Impala with John driving the car and Dean in his pajamas holding Sam in his arms. A scene that could have happened just a few hours after Mary ended up in flames on Sam's nursery ceiling. Looking for a reference photo of a young JDM will be a lot of fun, I am sure...
Is there a color version of that illustration ?
No. Exactly like my Lucifer, this drawing was aimed to stay in B&W. To be completely honest, it should have been in sepia tones and more "digital" (like a real CG painting actually) but finally, I let it as a sketch and added more shadows with Painter Essential and white highlights with Photoshop.

Soon, next week, I think. My next post will actually be devoted to a color illustration called Eat it Twilight!!, the one I sent to enter the JIB fan art competition. It shows Dean strangling a monster with the tape of an AC/DC cassette tape. To cut a long story short monsters and bad humor will be back in the next post. And if in addition you are nostalgic of cassette tapes and good old mulet rock, it will definitely be for you.
What medium did you use ?
A little bit of everything :
- Traditional : pencils (from 2H to 4B), crayons, charcoal, white paint, black china Ink
- Digital :
* Photoshop CS : predefined brushes + color adjustment + all the white highlights
* Painter Essential 3 : Digital Watercolors
* Paint Pro Shop : Frame
